The Engine

There are two types of scooter engines.

Two stroke and Four stroke.

Two Stroke Engines

Run similar to 4 stroke with the exception that they have a separate oil bottle that needs to be filled say every 1500 or so kms. There is a red waring light on the dash of 2 strokes that give you plenty of warning for when the oil needs to be topped up.

Scheduled servicing for 2 stroke scooters varies in-between 25000 to 3000kms. Depends on the make and model. For the high performance units it may pay to change spark plugs more frequently.

Four Stroke Engines

Are conventional like a motor car. They don’t need the oil to be topped up but they do need regular servicing. More so than 2 strokes.

The majority of 4 stroke scooters only run 700ml to 1.2 litres of engine oil. Some run an oil filter, others run a strainer set-up. Either way be the scooter Taiwanese or Italian we suggest that clean oil is the life blood of the scooters engine.
